Is it bad to set multiple alarms?
Everyone tells you to set one alarm. Fifty-seven per cent of people don’t. The research on what that costs is more interesting — and more forgiving — than the advice suggests.
Is it bad to set multiple alarms?
Setting multiple alarms is not, on the evidence, harmful in itself. It is associated with slightly worse sleep in the final hour and a longer, foggier start — but a controlled 30-minute snooze window costs only about six minutes of sleep and does not measurably damage your cognition, cortisol or mood. What hurts is not the number of alarms. It is that nobody plans them.
Almost every article on this subject arrives at the same instruction: set one alarm, get up when it goes off. It is the advice from Cleveland Clinic, it is the advice syndicated across every morning-television health slot, and it is perfectly reasonable advice. It is also advice that the majority of people have quietly decided not to take.
The largest study of actual snoozing behaviour — 450 working professionals tracked for ten months with wearables and daily surveys — found that 57% were habitual snoozers, which the researchers defined explicitly as “using multiple alarms to accomplish waking”.
So the interesting question is not whether you should set multiple alarms. Most people already do. The interesting question is what those alarms are actually costing you, and whether a pile of them is the same thing as a plan.
What the research found
Three studies do most of the work here, and they are worth reading together because they disagree in a specific and informative way.
Multiple alarms stretch the morning out
The single most useful number in this literature is a comparison of how long people take to actually leave the bed. In the Notre Dame study, people who snoozed took 26.9 minutes from their first alarm to getting out of bed. People who set a single alarm took 8.5 minutes.
The point everyone misses
That 26.9 minutes is the finding, not the failure. If you set multiple alarms, you already have a wake-up window — roughly half an hour of it. You did not choose it, you do not control when it ends, and you have never once written it down. But it exists, every morning, whether or not you approve of it.
The same study found snoozers had a resting heart rate about 1.9 bpm higher across the night, slightly more light sleep and slightly less deep sleep in the final hour — but no difference at all in total sleep duration (8.15 hours versus 8.21). These are real effects and they are small.
A controlled snooze costs about six minutes
The Stockholm group took 31 habitual snoozers into a lab and gave them two mornings: one with a 30-minute snooze period, one with an abrupt single wake-up. During those 30 minutes of snoozing, people got more than 20 minutes of actual sleep. The net cost for the night was about six minutes.
Their cognition — processing speed, episodic memory, executive function, arithmetic — was unchanged or slightly better after snoozing than after being yanked awake once. Cortisol, morning tiredness and mood showed no adverse effect. And critically: nobody was woken out of slow-wave sleep during the snooze period.
But repeated forced awakenings do make grogginess worse
Against that sits a Japanese study which found that snooze alarms prolong sleep inertia compared with a single alarm, through what the authors call “repeated forced awakenings”: fragmented sleep in the final twenty minutes, slower reaction times, more stage transitions. In their survey, 70.5% of students used snooze, mostly to reduce the anxiety of oversleeping.
Why the studies disagree — and what it tells you
The contradiction resolves once you look at what was actually being tested. Sundelin studied a designed 30-minute window with a known end. Ogawa studied repeated forced awakenings from the same alarm. Those are not the same behaviour, and only one of them is a plan.
This is the distinction that the “just set one alarm” advice flattens. There is a real difference between:
- Setting six identical alarms nine minutes apart, dismissing each one in a fog, and having no idea at any point which one was the last;
- Deciding the night before that you will start waking at 7:00 and be upright by 7:30, and arranging the intervening half hour so that it ends.
Both look like “multiple alarms” from the outside. Only the second one has a deadline, and the deadline is the part that does the work. The anxiety in the Japanese survey — 70.5% snoozing to avoid oversleeping — is anxiety about an undefined ending.
How many alarms should you set?
If you are going to snooze anyway, four or five alarms across a window of about 30 minutes is a sensible shape: enough that no single gap is long enough to fall deeply asleep in, few enough that the last one still means something. The number matters far less than whether the window has a fixed end.
Some practical constraints worth knowing:
- Keep the window to about half an hour. Sundelin’s 30 minutes is the duration with actual evidence behind it. Beyond that you are pushing into a second sleep cycle, and the six-minute cost stops being six minutes.
- Do not space them evenly. Even gaps make every alarm feel identical, which is precisely the condition under which your brain learns to dismiss them without waking.
- Make them sound different. The same tone six times is a stimulus you habituate to. Escalating tones are a stimulus you do not.
- Decide the last one in advance, while awake. Everything about a 7am decision is compromised. The 11pm version of you is the one who should be setting the deadline.
What an alarm ladder is
We use the term alarm ladder for the second version above — a run of alarms across a wake window, spaced so the gaps tighten toward a hard deadline, each rung more insistent than the last.

The tightening is the whole idea. A long first gap is genuinely restful — it is long enough to drift, which is the part people actually want from snoozing. The short gaps at the end are not restful and are not meant to be; they are there so that the last ten minutes of the window cannot be slept through.
Why a pile of iPhone alarms is not a ladder
You can build something close to this in the stock Clock app, and plenty of people have. It breaks down in three predictable places.
- You rebuild it every night, or you leave it all on and get woken at seven on a Saturday.
- Snooze and dismiss are a decision at every alarm, made by a person who is not currently capable of making decisions. Hit dismiss on the wrong one and the plan is gone.
- Nothing escalates. Alarm six is identical to alarm one, which is the habituation problem restated.
This is the problem Slowrise was built for. And if the mornings are hard regardless of how you arrange the alarms — every day, for weeks — that is a sleep problem rather than an alarm problem, and worth taking to a doctor.
